When you think about modern heavy rock, your mind might go to America, the UK, or Scandinavia. But over the last two decades, one band from Athens, Greece, has quietly built an empire of riffs, grooves, sweat and artistic sincerity. That band is Planet of Zeus. And this is an article about them, their career, their peaks, their music and their influence, only a few days before the band’s live show on September 6th 2025, in Athens, Greece.

From humble beginnings in 2000, playing anywhere they could—from smoky bars to small clubs—they worked their way to international festivals and tours alongside giants like Clutch and Mastodon. Today, they stand as one of the most respected heavy rock acts not only in Greece but across Europe …
Planet of Zeus formed in Athens – the Greek stoner/heavy rock scene had just started to grow and few musicians came together, united by their passion for heavy riffs and massive grooves.
After years of hard work, they recorded their first album. In 2008, Planet of Zeus released “Eleven the Hard Way” through Casket Music/Copro Records in the UK. For a debut, it was raw, fresh, and full of attitude. Critics took notice – Metal Hammer and Kerrang! praised it, and even Iron Maiden’s Bruce Dickinson played tracks on his BBC radio show!
The real turning point came in 2011 with the release of their sophomore album, “Macho Libre”. Put out through B-Otherside Records, this record hit like a thunderbolt. The album combined southern rock swagger, stoner heaviness, and groove metal power in a way that felt fresh. It was dirty, groovy, and instantly memorable. Fans connected not just with the riffs but with the energy and humor running through the songs. With tracks like “Leftovers” and “Vanity Suit”, Planet of Zeus became a big name in Greece’s underground scene. And at the same time, they began touring outside of Greece, proving themselves night after night to new audiences.
By the time “Vigilante” arrived in 2014 (through ihaveadrum Records), Planet of Zeus had become a force. This third album showed a more focused, mature band. They weren’t just a fun stoner rock act anymore, but Greece’s fine export in the fields of stoner/heavy rock music. “Vigilante” was heavy, riff-driven, and groovy as hell. It was also darker and more political, as far as the lyrics are concerned. The songs carried anger, frustration, but also hope, making the album feel both personal and universal. This record solidified their status in Europe. By now, Planet of Zeus had already done multiple European tours, sharing stages with big names like Mastodon, Kvelertak, and of course Clutch. Their reputation as one of the tightest, most passionate live bands in Europe grew stronger with every gig.
Then came a big curveball – in 2016, Planet of Zeus released “Loyal to the Pack”. At first, fans didn’t know what to think. The band shifted away from pure riff-driven stoner rock and added deeper, more emotional lyrics and highly melodic songwriting. The result? An album that shocked some fans but eventually became their best-selling release. Songs from “Loyal to the Pack” showed a band unafraid to evolve. They explored loyalty, brotherhood, and personal struggle, wrapped in powerful yet more melodic arrangements. Some people call this album their masterpiece—it’s definitely one of their bravest moments.
Three years later, Planet of Zeus released their fifth studio album, “Faith in Physics”, on Heavy Psych Sounds. This was another bold move. The record was full of heavy grooves and big riffs – it was described as “intellectually leaning hard-edged stoner rock” and sounded like a mix of Rage Against the Machine, MC5 and Queens of the Stone Age. It was angry, sharp, and intelligent, but also melodic and catchy. Critics praised it as one of their strongest efforts. Without a doubt, it proved that Planet of Zeus were still growing, still evolving, and still fearless.
“Afterlife” is the latest Planet of Zeus album, a great self-released record, with which the Greeks continue their fearless, relentless journey. Planet of Zeus show no signs of slowing down here. They once again surprise us, evolve and push their sound further. Planet of Zeus give everything they have – and we enjoy every moment of it!
If you ask anyone who has seen Planet of Zeus live, they’ll tell you the same thing: it’s a life-changing experience! Whether they’re playing in front of 100 people or 12,000 people, they give the same energy. It’s raw, honest, and explosive. Their shows are sweaty, full of movement, and emotionally charged. The band has an almost telepathic connection on stage, locking into grooves that shake the floor. Fans scream, mosh, dance, and sing along. By the end of a set, everyone feels part of something bigger. It’s no wonder Clutch handpicked them as the main support for their 2015 Psychic Warfare European Tour. To share the stage with such a legendary band and hold their own every night proved Planet of Zeus were ready for the big leagues; they’ve toured Europe at least seven times, played legendary festivals like Graspop, Bloodstock, Hellfest, Wacken, Desertfest, etc., and built a reputation as one of the hardest working bands in the scene.
Planet of Zeus are the proof that you don’t need to be from America or the UK to make it in heavy music. They broke barriers, showing that a band from Athens can share stages with the world’s best and win. They’ve inspired countless younger Greek bands to pick up instruments and chase their dreams. In a way, Planet of Zeus have become the flagbearers of Greek heavy rock.
Over two decades, six studio albums, one live album and countless tours, Planet of Zeus has proven that passion and persistence can move mountains.
