The Finnish rock/metal scene has always had great appeal. You see, the Finns know well how to write powerful, melodic songs that stick in your mind. One of the bands we have always liked and still keep in our hearts to this day is The 69 Eyes. As one of the main representatives of the modern gothic rock sound, The 69 Eyes have created their own personal style, which combines gothic rock, glam rock, punk and rock ’n’ roll, and is called goth ’n’ roll. Without following trends, but instead creating their own movement since the late ’80s and surviving until today, The 69 Eyes are an artistic phenomenon – and that is exactly what we analyze here, as in a few days, on May 7, 2026, we will see them live in Athens at Gazarte.

Back in 1989, in the bars and smoky corners of Helsinki, a group of young guys decided to start a band. At the center of it all was Jyrki 69 — tall, deep-voiced, obsessed with vampires, rock mythology and writing lyrics that feel like scenes from a movie. The original line-up came together with guitarists Bazie and Timo-Timo, bassist Archzie and drummer Lotto. A couple of years later, drummer Jussi 69 joined — and that lineup never changed again, something pretty rare in rock. No drama, no bullshit, just five guys locked into the same dark groove for decades.
At first, The 69 Eyes were basically a glam rock band. Think Mötley Crüe meets Hanoi Rocks — flashy, sleazy, funny, a bit dangerous. Their early releases like the singles “Sugarman” and “Barbarella” had that raw, street-level rock vibe. Their debut album “Bump ‘n’ Grind” (1992) and the follow-up, the compilation “Motor City Resurrection” (1994) kept that glam energy alive. It was all about attitude, riffs and that rock ‘n’ roll swagger. But even back then, there was something darker creeping in.
By the late ‘90s, things started to change. The band dropped “Wrap Your Troubles in Dreams” (1997), which fans still see as the last pure “glam-era” record.
In 1999, they released “Wasting the Dawn” – and that was it, the moment The 69 Eyes found their real identity. The sound got darker, slower, moodier, gothic for sure and cinematic too. The title track was a tribute to Jim Morrison, and the video even featured Ville Valo playing Morrison’s ghost! Around 2000, The 69 Eyes approached what would become their signature sound; they released “Blessed Be”, their fifth album, a masterpiece produced by Johnny Lee Michaels, which featured four hit singles (“Gothic Girl”, “Brandon Lee”, “The Chair” and “Stolen Season”).
“Paris Kills” (2002) blew things up even more. This album hit number one in Finland and went platinum. This was their breakthrough, the moment they stopped being a cult band and became a serious name in rock. By the time “Devils” dropped in 2004, The 69 Eyes were fully in their vampire era. Songs like “Lost Boys” (inspired by the same titled movie) showed how much they loved mixing music with movie culture. As a result of their big success, they toured like crazy — Europe, the U.S., Japan, Australia — bringing their dark aesthetic everywhere. Their live shows were gothic rock dance parties!
The albums kept coming and coming. “Angels” (2007) went straight to number one in Finland. “Back in Blood” (2009) leaned more into a raw, guitar-driven sound again. You could say they were reconnecting with their rock roots, but keeping the gothic vibe intact.
Fast forward to the 2010s and beyond, these guys are still delivering. “X” (2012), “Universal Monsters” (2016) and “West End” (2019) show a band that knows exactly who they are. Some years later, they dropped “Death of Darkness”, proving they still have something to say. It truly sounds like classic The 69 Eyes — melancholic, romantic, nostalgic. Their success and fame led to a huge collaboration – they recently worked with famous American songwriter Diane Warren on the power ballad “Fade to Grey”. Now the band is touring all over the world and thank god, they didn’t leave Greece outside!
From glam rock beginnings to gothic rock legends, they’ve carved out their own musical lane — dark, romantic, a little cheesy, but always cool, sharp and fresh. The 69 Eyes are a band you simply can’t get bored of. And how could you, when these five guys take the raw energy of rock ‘n’ roll, the lyricism of gothic, the narcissism of glam rock, and the sharp edge of punk, blend it all with a vampiric aesthetic and a dark cinematic atmosphere, and end up creating songs that tell irresistibly dark and melancholic stories — both musically and lyrically? As their frontman Jyrki 69 once said, most of their songs are basically wannabe movie soundtracks!
The 69 Eyes — the vampires from Helsinki — are coming to our country, and we’ll be there to dance, scream and shout with them at a goth ‘n’ roll event that’s bound to go down in history!
