Kostas Tournas, one of the most talented and well-respected Greek musicians, a true pioneer of Greek rock, is going to enchant us at the Golden R. Festival 2025 in Volos, Greece. Some days before this much-anticipated event, Myth of Rock is making a retrospective of the story of Kostas Tournas, his art and songs, and what makes him so unforgettable. Let’s meet again with this true musical legend.

Kostas Tournas was born on September 23, 1949, in Tripoli, Arcadia, Greece. At just 10 years old, he moved to Athens, where he discovered his passion for music. He started with lessons in his local town’s philharmonic band and picked up the guitar at age 13. From that young age, he was consumed by music—not school—and his wild focus laid the groundwork for what was to come.
In the early 1970s, Tournas co-founded Poll, alongside Robert Williams and Stavros Logaridis. The group became legendary—part folk-pop/rock, part protest voice of the youth, and totally revolutionary. Their song “Anthrope Agapa” is often considered Greece’s first anti-war rock anthem. Their music struck a chord with young Greeks during a time when creativity felt dangerous. Poll’s early hits didn’t just roll—they roared with meaning. With songs like “Ilie Mou”, “Stin Pigi Mia Kopela”, “Aetoi” and “I Genia Mas”, they voiced the hopes, mindsets, and dreams of their generation.
Once Poll disbanded, Tournas went solo and released a bold, boundary-pushing work: “Aperanta Horafia” in 1972. This 40-minute progressive-psychedelic rock opera even mirrored orchestral elements and stood as an artistic act of resistance against the regime then ruling Greece.
In 1973, he dropped “Astroneira”, an album that took us on a journey through space and time, fitting themes for such an adventurous mind. The track “I Michani Tou Chronou” became especially beloved for its poetic boldness. He also joined the rock opera “Trojan War”, collaborating with other Greek music icons like Robert Williams, Marina, and Yannis Petritsis—cementing his role in the evolution of Greek rock.
Over the years, Tournas created a growing discography—albums like “Kiries & Κirioi”, “Lefka ftera”, “… Epi Gis Eirini …”, “Sto Cinema”, and many more followed. He composed over 500 songs—more than enough to fill any golden era playlist. His works have been covered by dozens of other artists, reflecting how deeply his music resonated across Greece. Some standout tracks from later years include “Min Tis To Peis”, “Tora Tora Tora”, “Den Metaniono” and “Opou Fysaei O Anemos”—songs that merge rock, pop, and Greek traditions effortlessly. His talent earned him national and international festival awards, gold records and an influential presence in music production and television.
Beyond artistry, Tournas served for 27 years in union leadership roles, heading singer associations like ETE, the rights organization ERATO, and representing performers internationally through FIA.
So, why do we celebrate Kotsas Tournas? He is a real trailblazer of Greek rock — from Poll’s early days to solo concept albums, his art reshaped an era. His voice was one of resistance and youth — his music reflected social moods and inspired transformation. A prolific musician and brilliant songwriter, Tournas has released dozens of albums and continues to create music to this day. Of course, his work continues to thrive via reissues, tribute anthologies, and rediscoveries by new generations.
