THE KING CANUTES – “CARS AND GIRLS” (2025, SINGLE, MAGIC DOOR)

by MythofRock

The King Canutes take on Prefab Sprout’s “Cars and Girls” with respect, warmth and their own quietly confident identity. What stands out immediately is that this is not a cover made to impress through theatrics or modern twists, it’s a conversation with the original. The duo clearly understands the emotional DNA of the song, and they treat it with care, but they also allow their personalities to flow through naturally. Keir Woods’ vocals carry a gentle nostalgia, almost like someone remembering a summer that felt endless but is now just a soft blur. His tone has honesty and sounds simple, melodic, and sincere. Richard Alwyn Fisher’s guitar work adds texture and movement, sometimes dreamy, sometimes slightly bittersweet, and the gradual transition from drum machine to live drums gives the arrangement a feeling of unfolding, like a memory gaining color and detail as you revisit it. What I like the most is the patience in the performance. Nothing is rushed; nothing is forced. The King Canutes understand that this song doesn’t need exaggeration, but space. And they give it plenty. The track leans into the influences they openly embrace — British folk, Scottish indie pop, midwestern college rock, but without sounding retro or vintage. There is wistfulness here, and a gentle confidence. A recognition of the original’s charm, and at the same time, a quiet statement that this is their world now — New York, London, memories, friendships, movement and the strange distance between where you started and where you’ve ended up. “Cars and Girls” is a tender and beautiful tribute!
