Smoulder first piqued our interest with their debut album, “Times of Obscene Evil and Wild Daring” (2019), a record that announced their arrival with unparalleled force. Its blend of epic doom and power metal, paired with Sarah Ann Kitteringham’s commanding vocals, drew immediate comparisons to legendary bands like Manilla Road and Candlemass. The album’s lyrics, steeped in high fantasy and sword-and-sorcery lore, showcased the band’s passion for storytelling and their ability to create immersive worlds through music. Tracks like “The Sword Woman” and “Shadowy Sisterhood” quickly became anthems for fans of epic metal.
Following the success of their debut, Smoulder released the “Dream Quest Ends” EP in 2020, a strong offering that solidified their status in the metal community. Featuring two new original tracks, a faithful cover of Manilla Road’s “Cage of Mirrors” and re-recordings of songs from their demo, the EP served as both a celebration of their roots and a bridge to their future. The title track, with its soaring choruses and intricate arrangements, stood out as a proof of the band’s maturity and confidence.
In 2023, Smoulder unveiled their sophomore album, “Violent Creed of Vengeance”, an opus that many fans and critics have hailed as their masterpiece. This record not only climbed to the top of numerous year-end lists but has already been enshrined as a modern classic of the epic metal genre. Drawing thematic inspiration from societal turmoil during the COVID-19 pandemic, the album tackles issues of misogyny, isolation and revenge. Tracks like the title song deliver both a sonic assault and a poignant message, encapsulating the band’s ability to blend ferocity with introspection.
Despite their rapid ascent, Smoulder remain a band in evolution. With vocalist Sarah Ann Kitteringham and guitarist Shon Vincent relocating to Finland in 2022, the group has embraced a more international identity, expanding their horizons.
Their music, described as a fusion of influences from Manilla Road, Solitude Aeturnus, Fates Warning, early Blind Guardian and others, continues to resonate with listeners who crave the grandeur and drama of epic metal.
One of Smoulder’s most defining characteristics is their unwavering commitment to the fantastical. The band’s lyrics and imagery are deeply rooted in the sword-and-sorcery subgenre, with Michael Moorcock’s Eternal Champion mythos serving as a key influence. This dedication extends to their album artwork, which features striking, hand-painted covers that evoke the spirit of vintage pulp fantasy novels. The band’s ability to channel these influences into their music has endeared them to fans of both metal and fantasy literature.
As Smoulder prepares to headline a special show in Athens, Greece on January 25th 2025, fans eagerly await the chance to witness their powerful live performance. This event promises to be a celebration of epic metal’s enduring spirit, led by a band that has proven that they are not only heirs to the genre’s legacy but also its innovators. The live event will be opened by Darklon and Dragon Skull.
