With her latest single, “For Want Of”, San Francisco-based artist Aursjoen presents a lush, immersive sound that feels like stepping into a shadowy dream world. The second single from her debut EP “Strand”, this track continues to establish Ria Aursjoen’s presence in the ethereal goth and darkwave scenes – her work as vocalist and keyboardist with Octavian Winters is brilliant! Recorded, mixed and mastered by the well-distinguished musician and producer William Faith, the song’s polished yet deeply atmospheric sound draws listeners in an almost cinematic way. From the first notes of the keyboards, “For Want Of” evokes a sense of longing. Then the sparse percussion adds grace to the final result, which is dominated by the fragile, vulnerable and emotional vocals of Ria. Her voice, resolute and unwavering, carries a haunting beauty and a folk influence permeates the vocal performance and the vocal melodies. The song’s ethereal and cinematic qualities are amplified by its accompanying music video, directed by filmmaker David Kruschke. Having listened to this single, I can say that we are ready to understand and perceive the unique cinematic and ethereal, introspective and personal sound of Aursjoen and her debut EP. Atmospheric and emotionally resonant, “For Want Of” is a captivating offering from a bold voice in ethereal music. Fans of Wardruna, Dead Can Dance, Cocteau Twins, Octavian Winters, Clannad and Faith and the Muse will find much to love in Aursjoen’s incredibly elegant and enchanting world.
