The statements made by Kirk Hammett to the Greek audience during last night’s Metallica live show at the Olympic Athletic Center of Athens were both incredible and deeply moving.
The legendary guitarist of the American metal stars addressed the crowd at one point during the remarkable concert, saying that he had a public statement to make:
“Every time I pick up my guitar, I play scales that were invented by your ancestors! Music theory was born right here in Athens, by Pythagoras. I think about that every time I’m here! Every time I play my guitar, I think about Greek culture!”
Hammett concluded by thanking the Greek people for their immense cultural contribution to music, while also expressing his love for Greece.
Unbelievable words — powerful statements that carry even greater weight when spoken by an international superstar, a guitar legend, and one of heavy metal’s most iconic figures.
Thank you, Kirk, for everything that you and Metallica have given us over the years.
These are the kinds of words that deserve to be heard.
