Ecce Shnak, the alt art rock band, which is based in New York, had released the EP “Joke Oso” in 2021 – this release included the song “Larry, Sleepover Friend”, which comes again in the spotlight and under our radar. In this song we understand not only how the band developed through time, but also all the essential, key characteristics of the Ecce Shnak sound. Although the song has an intimate melodic punk rock character, you can detect the art/techno/prog rock details, which make the big difference. In the beginning, you encounter the numb vocals of David Roush, yet there are significant elements underneath, which really steal the show, like the guitar phrases, the introspective, lively rhythm section and the truly interesting bridge before the final choruses of the song. “Larry, Sleepover Friend” showcases the complex style of this amazing band, its art rock value and its innovating mindset. Ecce Shnak don’t stand behind tags and labels, but mix and blend a long span of music influences, from pop to punk to avant-garde. It’s a rewarding song for every persistent music lover, who won’t stop at the song’s low profile, but will delve into a rich ocean of music! Just like me, who firstly didn’t understand the lush instrumentation and the cerebral content of “Larry, Sleepover Friend”. Now I admire the song’s finesse and depth! The production isn’t bombastic, but it lets each instrument shine and helps the musicians send their artistic message. All in all, we have an astonishing song from these alt art rockers, who impress listeners, even being so modest and simple. We are already looking forward to the band’s upcoming new album, “Dandy Variances”!
