ALKYMIST – “UNNDERR” (2024, INDISCIPLINARIAN)

by MythofRock

Danish doom metallers Alkymist have released their third creation, “UnnDerr”. The album is both heavy and hypnotic, building layers of intense, deep riffs and haunting vocals that draw the listener in. Now, if you were to describe their sound, it would be heavy, fuzzy, mind-spinning. Out of that description alone, I knew it would be extremely interesting for me as a doom fan. Opening with the track “Levitating”, the album sets the tone with slow, deliberate build-ups and rich, layered instrumentation. The song starts with an almost meditative quality, featuring delicate guitar work that slowly escalates into something much heavier. Alkymist has released a beautifully complex album, with mind-blowing and genre-bending aspects. My personal favorite is the title track, with a runtime of almost ten minutes, “UnnDerr” is gorgeous, melody-weaving, and feels like a creation straight out of gothic, stoner and doom stardom. The album stands out for its ability to meld emotional depth with technical prowess. The sonic textures shift between haunting quietness and crushing weight, offering a balance of atmosphere and intensity that keeps things dynamic. There are definitely some Ihsahn references, especially in “Light of A Lost Star,” with its progressive and atmospheric qualities. Some Gojira influences can also be heard in the powerful, groovy riffs that elevate the heaviness throughout. Alkymist was a new discovery for me, and I can say I’ve definitely been wowed. Their ability to mix genres while keeping a unique, personal touch is impressive, and I’ll certainly find myself returning to listen again. “UnnDerr” is a beautifully crafted album that showcases Alkymist’s evolution as a band. Whether you’re a doom purist or just a fan of innovative metal, this album is definitely worth diving into.

♦ 9/10
