THE VINTAGE CARAVAN – “PORTALS” (2025, NAPALM)

I don’t know where the redemption of progressive rock will come from — but I do know that Iceland’s The Vintage Caravan have delivered one of the most refreshing hard rock/prog rock albums in recent memory. “Portals” is a vibrant, powerful, and deeply musical opus that breathes new life into a genre that too often feels suffocated by repetition. It’s a delicious collection of inspired compositions, tailor-made for fans of 70s hard rock and vintage prog — and it absolutely delivers. Their music feels alive — fresh, energetic, and full of depth and character. Whether it’s the super-heavy, infectious riffs, the beautiful refrains, or the sheer passion behind every note, The Vintage Caravan sound like a band that plays from the heart. The guitars are on fire, the solos are soulful and thrilling, and the vocals — expressive, emotional, and refreshingly natural — perfectly balance power with sensitivity. Add to that a production that feels warm, analog, and authentically old-school, and you’ve got a record that captures the true spirit of 70s rock while keeping its feet firmly planted in the present. Don’t expect wild time signatures or endless virtuoso passages — this isn’t about showing off. It’s about feel, atmosphere, and storytelling. The prog element here is more spiritual than technical; it’s in the band’s vision, their songwriting flow, and their ability to take you on a journey. With “Portals,” The Vintage Caravan have made a statement — that classic rock and prog sensibility can still sound vital and full of emotion in 2025. They’ve opened a gateway to a new world of retro-inspired rock, and I sincerely hope they continue down this path. “Portals” is an album that awakens!
