The Melancholy Kings, hailing from New Jersey, are back after six years, and their new single “Bitcoin Elegy” proves the wait was worth it. Despite its title, the track isn’t about crypto wallets, but about something far more human – the fading of real connection in the digital age. From the very first riff, the song grabs you with a restless urgency, the guitars buzzing with a kind of post-punk-meets-alt-country energy. It starts off fast, heavy and frantic, almost like it’s running out of time, before easing into a more reflective, folk-tinged groove mid-verse. That shift in tempo feels deliberate — a musical metaphor for our own uneven relationship with “progress”, the constant tug between speed and stillness. Lyrically, frontman Mike Potenza weaves together big ideas with biting wit. References to Yeats and King Canute might sound lofty on paper, but they’re delivered with the same ragged charm you’d expect from a band that wears its Westerberg/Tweedy influences proudly. Lines about tides, undertows, and the inevitability of change land perfectly against the backdrop of churning guitars and Olivia Selig’s spectral backing vocals. The band plays like a unit that’s been through life together — seasoned, sharp and still hungry. Scott Selig’s basslines keep the whole thing anchored, while Paul Andrew’s drumming and Peter Horvath’s harmonies flesh out the track with warmth and grit. Producer Ray Ketchem (Guided By Voices, Luna) gives it that crisp-yet-gritty sheen, letting the raw emotion shine through without sanding down the edges. “Bitcoin Elegy” is clever and tuneful. It’s a song that makes you nod along while realizing you’re humming an elegy for connection itself.
