CRASH HARMONY – “ORANGE BACKGROUND” (2024, SINGLE, MAGIC DOOR)

by MythofRock

Have you ever heard of Yale rock? That’s the distinctive sound crafted by Crash Harmony, a band formed in 1986 in New Haven, CT, during their time at Yale University. After playing their final gig in May 1988, the band went silent for decades, until a reunion in 2022 reignited the spirit of their college years and inspired them to finally release their early material. Now, the Yale rockers present their debut album, “Nobody Asked For This”, with “Orange Background” as a standout single. “Orange Background” is a captivating track that takes listeners on a truly unique sonic journey. Based on the multiple guitar layers and the accompanying, gentle rhythm section, this track feels timeless and romantic, powerful and sweet. The main emotion that “Orange Background” evokes is melancholia, which – sooner or later – envelops the listener, and leads to a genuine nostalgia. The track has an amazing bridge, where the guitars excel with their licks and lead parts. Yet, what made me get smoothly into the song and feel mesmerized is the mellow voice of Dave Derby (vocals, guitar). There is a warmth in “Orange Background”, which comes as a result of the excellent musicianship of the each member of Crash Harmony and the soulful, clear and intense sound production (the mixing and mastering was done by renowned producer Ray Ketchem). Having admired this nice single, I wonder what else the full-length album of Crash Harmony will have to offer! Thumbs up for these Yale rockers!
