AFI announces new album ‘Silver Bleeds The Black Sun…’ and shares lead single ‘Behind The Clock’.
AFI are set to release their twelfth studio album, “Silver Bleeds The Black Sun…”, on October 3 via Run For Cover Records. The album kicks off a bold new chapter for the legendary band and features the lead single “Behind The Clock”. Along with the track, AFI have unveiled a music video directed by Gilbert Trejo.
Regarding the experience working with Trejo, AFI vocalist Davey Havok said: “Gilbert’s video has sublimated the essence of ‘Behind The Clock’. His vision and expertise is inspiring. Working with him was a privilege and utter joy. He is an artist of the purest form.”
Speaking about the “Behind The Clock” video, Trejo commented: “We wanted the video to feel like you’re seeing something you shouldn’t. In effect you are, because that’s how Davey writes lyrics. He’s expressing himself so openly, that you’re let behind this curtain. It’s a world that most artists don’t cut to, marrow deep.”
For over 30 years, AFI has been in a constant state of evolution. With each new album, they’ve deliberately pushed their sound forward — often in bold, unexpected directions — refusing to settle into one genre or rely on past successes. This fearless approach has both grown and challenged their fanbase, as the band’s identity continues to shift and defy easy categorization. With “Silver Bleeds The Black Sun…”, AFI once again embarks on a fresh chapter — one that even caught them off guard.
This time around, the band set out to craft an album centered around a single mood — something dreamlike and ethereal. In doing so, they tapped into long-standing influences that have always lingered beneath the surface of their music, now brought fully into the spotlight. The result is a record that feels timeless: familiar yet new, nostalgic yet forward-thinking. “Silver Bleeds The Black Sun…” is haunting and elegant, sharp yet beautiful — unmistakably AFI, but unlike anything they’ve done before.
What has kept AFI relevant for over three decades is a fearless commitment to creativity, a masterful blend of influences, and, above all, an unwavering sense of identity. They’ve never followed trends — they’ve helped shape them. Starting out as a scrappy high school hardcore outfit in the early ’90s (Answer That and Stay Fashionable, Very Proud of Ya, Shut Your Mouth and Open Your Eyes), they evolved into a darker, more melodic punk force at the turn of the millennium (Black Sails in the Sunset, The Art of Drowning).
The 2000s saw their breakthrough into the mainstream with Sing the Sorrow and Decemberunderground, while the years that followed cemented their status as ever-evolving alt-rock veterans with albums like Crash Love, Burials, The Blood Album, and Bodies. Through every phase, AFI has never lost sight of who they are — even as that identity continues to shift.
