Every time a stoner rock album comes into my hands, before I listen to it, I always wonder: what new do today’s stoner bands have to offer? So, when I got the new 1000mods album, “Cheat Death”, I thought I knew what to expect. I was confident it would be a good album, but would it bring anything fresh to the genre? Well, after listening to it, you’ll realize that the Greek stoner rockers still have a lot to offer—to their genre, to contemporary rock music and to their fans. Prepare yourself for a truly inspired album. 1000mods have composed amazing songs, full of fresh ideas, catchy melodies, massive riffs and killer grooves. Every track has something to say, each one is top-notch, and you won’t be able to get them out of your head. The band’s energy and creativity have led to something exceptional and captivating. What is more, you’ll notice that they explore other musical styles—1000mods show their heavy metal, punk and psychedelic sides throughout the album. For instance, listen to “Speedhead,” and you’ll hear a unique tribute to Motörhead. Check out the ten-minute epic “Grey, Green Blues,” and you’ll see just how psychedelic 1000mods can be. The album also benefits from precise, cohesive and solid production, incredible guitar work, vivid vocals and an unmistakable band spirit that ties everything together. 1000mods have accomplished something difficult, almost impossible—in 2024, they’ve managed to create a stoner rock record that remains engaging from start to finish. “Cheat Death” is a triumph for this Greek band, who now sound more powerful and mature than ever.
