Shock and pain in the world of rock music. Two more deaths of well-known musicians bring grief to rock fans. This time we would like to express our condolences for the passing of Walter Becker, co-founder of Steely Dan, and Dave Hlubek, founding member of Molly Hatchet. Both were found dead on September 3, 2017. Guitarist and bassist Walter Becker died at the age of 67, but no cause of death was provided (Becker missed Steely Dan’s Classic East and West concerts as he recovered from an unspecified ailment); Guitarist Dave Hlubek died of a heart attack at the age of 66.
Molly Hatchet posted a statement on its official Facebook page; “It is with great sorrow to announce the passing of our beloved friend and band member Dave Hlubek. Dave was one of the founding lead guitarists of Molly Hatchet. Amongst his many contributions to southern rock is ‘Flirtin’ with Disaster.’ Our condolences and our prayers go out to his family during this time of loss. He will be missed but never forgotten, as the music lives on through his legacy in Molly Hatchet.”
Donald Fagen, Becker’s bandmate, wrote in a tribute to Becker; “Walter Becker was my friend, my writing partner and my bandmate since we met as students at Bard College in 1967. He was smart as a whip, an excellent guitarist and a great songwriter. He was cynical about human nature, including his own, and hysterically funny”.
Our thoughts to the family and friends of these so influential musicians. You will be missed.
