Shortly after the announcement of Mike Howe’s death, the rock/metal community mourns the passing of a great musician, an extravagant personality and drums icon, Joey Jordison, cofounder and original drummer of Slipknot. He was only 46 years old. The news was broken by his family. A cause of death was not disclosed, although the statement says he died “peacefully in his sleep”.
The statement of his family reads: “We are heartbroken to share the news that Joey Jordison, prolific drummer, musician and artist passed away peacefully in his sleep on July 26, 2021. He was 46. Joey’s death has left us with empty hearts and feelings of indescribable sorrow. To those that knew Joey, understood his quick wit, his gentle personality, giant heart and his love for all things family and music. The family of Joey have asked that friends, fans and media understandably respect our need for privacy and peace at this incredibly difficult time. The family will hold a private funeral service and asks the media and public to respect their wishes”.
Jordison’s drumming was charismatic and very influential, and can be heard in all classic Slipknot albums, until 2013, when he and Slipknot took different paths. Apart from Slipknot, he played guitar in Murderdolls and drums in Scar the Martyr and his most recent band, Sinsaenum.
In a January 2018 interview, Jordison revealed that he suffered from acute transverse myelitis.
Joey, thank you for everything. Rest in peace …
