Amenspear is the old-school death/black metal project of Steve Vathis, which began in 2024 and is based in New York. “Ego’s Carrion” is its new EP release, consisting of three songs, all firmly rooted in the tradition of extreme metal bands such as Death, Morbid Angel and Dismember. This EP is ideal for every fan of blackened death metal, featuring massive and catchy guitar riffs, complex arrangements, multidimensional vocals, and a cohesive rhythm section. Guided by a smart and consistent production, Vathis has achieved a very interesting result that fully realizes his artistic vision. Of course, this is a release that demands multiple spins, but it will surely reward anyone willing to spend time with it. “Ego’s Carrion” will blow up your speakers, as it is loud, heavy as hell, and packed with enough twists and turns to keep your interest alive from beginning to end. Amenspear offers us a hard-hitting, crushing death/black metal EP that, as a statement of intent, lays solid groundwork for the upcoming full-length album. I am very optimistic about what is yet to come, because after listening to these three songs, it is clear that Amenspear possesses both great talent and untapped potential waiting to be fully revealed. “Ego’s Carrion” is an EP that introduces listeners to the fascinating sonic cosmos of Steve Vathis—and if this is only the beginning, then the best is definitely yet to come.
