SOEN are a band who can tear your flesh apart with sheer power and moments later, balm the pain with beautiful melodies, and new single ‘Discordia‘ is no exception. ‘Discordia‘ takes the listener on a musical exploration, juxtaposing lush sombre moments with crushing waves of relentless propulsion.

“‘Discordia” is the result of us pushing ourselves into different territories both sonically and emotionally.” comments founding member and drummer Martin Lopez. “We experimented with darker textures to capture the descent from self-protection into isolation“.

“The song sits in the tension between wanting connection and building walls to avoid pain. It’s a piece born from vulnerability, and from our willingness to explore the uncomfortable corners of our sound” furthers vocalist and frontman Joel Ekelöf.

On “Reliance”, the Swedish progressive metal powerhouse continue to find incredible new pathways through the vast spaces between light and dark, loud and calm, heavy and soothing. With Lars Enok Åhlund (keyboards & guitar), Cody Lee Ford (guitar), and Stefan Stenberg (bass) standing shoulder to shoulder with Ekelöf and Lopez, SOEN‘s ever-expanding sonic landscape reaches new heights.

That evolution is grounded in a deep commitment to honesty.  Across their seventh studio album, emotional gravity and raw power coexist without compromise, giving “Reliance” its unmistakable pulse.

“Lyrically and musically, we want to go through all of human emotions: beauty and anger and heavy and soft, it’s always been the goal of the band” affirms Lopez.

The first single ‘Primal‘, is a provoking, barrel-chested roar detailing the existential fight between the human spirit and our current world, with Ekelöf‘s incredible vocals leading the heavy charge.

The recently released second single ‘Mercenary‘, is a track that channels the weight of inherited violence and the personal cost of conviction with unflinching clarity.

SOEN unveil their powerful new single “Mercenary”, the second track taken from their upcoming studio album “Reliance”, set for release on January 16 via Silver Lining Music.

With “Reliance”, their seventh studio album, Swedish progressive metal visionaries Soen — led by vocalist Joel Ekelöf and drummer Martin Lopez — continue to explore the fascinating space between light and darkness, power and calm, heaviness and serenity.

Honesty lies at the heart of this record, where emotional weight and raw strength coexist without compromise. This duality defines Soen’s sound — their fearless drive to confront darkness not for spectacle, but in search of truth. Nowhere is this balance more evident than in “Mercenary”, a track that carries the burden of inherited violence and the personal toll of conviction with unflinching clarity.

Oddland were the second band to play that night, a progressive metal band from Turku, Finland, performing for their first time in Greece, just as Trope. They had really interesting and catchy songs like “Eternal Erode”, and they seduced us to their progressive universe. My personal favorite moment of the night was, when they performed “Free Fall”, a really fantastic song with many changes, great riffs and very emotional. They prepared us properly for Soen and the audience really gave them a great applause.

And the big moment came … the Swedish supergroup Soen took over the stage at approximately 22.30 o’ clock. I will be honest with you – it was my first time seeing them on stage and I really didn’t know what to expect from them. I had heard all these big words that they were really amazing on stage, and I was very skeptical, until this night. Firstly, the show opened with a recitation of parts of the famous Dylan Thomas’ poem, which is actually one of my favorites and it was also used in the “Interstellar” movie – it says, “Do not go gentle into that good night, Rage, rage against the dying of the light”. As we were hearing it over and over again, the band started performing “Sincere”, and of course they played “Martyrs” and “Savia”, but their performance emphasized the new “Memorial” album – that was the tour all about, anyway. My personal favorite moment of the night was when they played “Lotus” … it was a moving interpretation with Joel Ekelöf as the protagonist. His performances are evocative, he has everything one needs to remember his singing. What can I say? The energy and emotion of each member was almost insane; Cody Lee Ford was playing the guitar with mania and Oleksii “Zlatoyar” Kobel (bass) headbanged all the way with his Rasta hair – all the members had an emotional and technical coordination that felt as cohesive and unified as a family and made this night truly unforgettable. Of course, we enjoyed the “Antagonist” and “Violence” encore, but we needed more songs like “The Words” and many more – we wanted MORE!

An unbelievable night – for sure, everyone who was there on the 17th of October 2024 will surely be present at Soen’s next performance in Greece. And I think that’s the point of it all.
