Soft Science offer us “Sand”, their fifth album, and once again prove why dream pop can be so damn addictive. Across these ten songs, the Northern California band creates a beautiful mix of shimmering guitars, dreamy vocals, shoegaze textures, post-punk energy, grunge aesthetic and strong pop melodies. The result is an album that sounds atmospheric and emotional, but never loses its momentum. From the opening moments, “Sand” pulls you into its world. There is a constant feeling of movement, as if the songs are floating forward while the guitars create waves of sound around them. The twin 12-string guitars are especially important here, giving the album that bright, hazy character, while the rhythm section keeps everything on the go. The synths and electronic touches add another layer without taking anything away from the songs themselves. “Spinning” is a fantastic example of what Soft Science do best. It has an infectious rhythm, beautiful vocals and guitars that keep building around the melody. “Understand” is another highlight, with a more uplifting feeling and a strong Lush influence. Then comes “Fade”, which combines a steady danceable pulse with dreamy vocals and a more reflective mood. These songs are catchy, but they also have real emotional weight. What I really like about “Sand” is that it does not stay trapped in sadness. The lyrics deal with broken patterns, difficult relationships, memory and uncertainty, but there is always some hope hiding underneath. The album feels wounded at times, but never defeated. Soft Science have clearly pushed their sound further, especially into noisier and more expansive territory, but they never forget the importance of melody. “Sand” is hypnotic, energetic and surprisingly uplifting. It is the kind of album that gets better with every listen, revealing another guitar line or melody each time. You’ll soon find yourself addicted to it!

Deardarkhead, the New Jersey instrumental alt-rock outfit, present the single “Letting Go”, off their new album “The Pendulum Swings”, their first full-length album in 25 years! “Letting Go” is a perfect example of what Deardarkhead are all about – a smart, emotional, evocative and honest fusion of alt-rock, shoegaze, dream pop and post-rock! The song begins with its steady drums and luminous, nostalgic guitars, which play the leading role in this guitar-oriented composition. It is like a travel companion while you are driving down the highway, like background music while you are working at home, like the soundtrack to a beautiful, adventurous life! Deardarkhead know how to take you on a distant, mysterious, misty ride, whether in the city or in the countryside. I personally didn’t know what to expect when I read the press info about this single, but when I pressed play, I understood why this song is described as an immersive experience – a song that you live, not just hear! The production is very clear and expressive, helping the musicians tell their story through beautiful notes. Don’t expect something progressive or avant-garde, although their mindset is certainly sophisticated. Deardarkhead have crafted a delicate song that speaks to both the mind and the heart. There is no way you will get bored with their musical story. If “The Pendulum Swings” is anything like this first single, then we are dealing with truly enchanting music, full of grace and richness! I liked it!

Detroit Illharmonic Symphony release their new album, “Everything Is Shattered”, and present the record’s title track as its lead single. My surprise was huge when I first heard this song and realized what Detroit Illharmonic Symphony are actually doing here. Extremely ambitious and willing to take big risks, the Americans pull off a crazy mashup, throwing punk, rock, indie rock and hip hop into the blender, while giving the final result a cinematic scope. It wouldn’t be an exaggeration to say that the track sounds like it was created by a punk rock band jamming in indie rock mode inside a James Bond movie. Strange as an idea and challenging as a listening experience, yet Detroit Illharmonic Symphony manage to create something special and personal, which, after repeated listens, truly excites the demanding listener. What emerges is a punk/indie rock anthem that feels like a sonic collision between different musical worlds. And the sound of that collision is highly intriguing, wild and forward-thinking. “Everything Is Shattered” feels restless and unpredictable, constantly shifting moods, but always holding together as a unified statement. Jack Grisham (TSOL) and Max Galbreath (ttwopercentmilk) take part in the track, and their vocal performances add serious weight to the final musical outcome, enhancing both the rawness and the dramatic intensity of the song. Paul Roessler’s production is key here: clean enough to feel cinematic, raw enough to keep the grit intact. Nothing feels over-polished, and that’s exactly the point. The result is a bold, unconventional single that refuses to play it safe and confirms Detroit Illharmonic Symphony as a band operating well outside the comfort zone of genre labels.

Messiness is a psych rock band I have always liked. And here they come with the “Eternity Unbound” single. It is the kind of track that doesn’t just play in the background, it pulls you into its world. Messiness delivers a psychedelic single that feels restless, hypnotic and constantly shifting. It’s under four minutes long, but there is a lot happening inside those minutes. The song moves between different time signatures, which gives it an off-balance, almost dizzying rhythm. It doesn’t feel chaotic though — instead, it feels alive. The verses have a tense, uneasy groove that bursts into a wider, more open chorus, before spiraling into a swirling instrumental section. The band blends psychedelia, art rock, space rock and Mediterranean musical influences, giving the track a warm, sun-soaked atmosphere, but also something shadowy underneath. You can hear memories of bands like early Pink Floyd or Soft Machine, but Messiness never sounds like they’re copying anyone. They have their own confident identity. As far as the vocals are concerned, Max Raffa sounds intense and thoughtful, delivering lyrics that explore identity, time and the feeling of not quite knowing yourself anymore. It’s poetic without being vague, emotional without being dramatic. The musicianship is impressive, but never show-off. The guitars shimmer and melt (listen to the incredible guitar solo!), the keyboards add a dreamy haze and the rhythm section keeps the music pushing forward even when the ground shifts beneath it. “Eternity Unbound” is exciting because it dares to be unpredictable while still remaining accessible. It is psychedelic rock at its finest!
