Speaking backstage at last weekend’s Download Festival, Haller revealed that Campbell has recorded two brand-new tracks with the Belfast heavy metal pioneers, marking his first studio work with SWEET SAVAGE since leaving the band in 1982.

Campbell, who later rose to international prominence with Dio, Whitesnake and Def Leppard, has maintained a close friendship with Haller over the years and has now become involved in an upcoming archival release celebrating SWEET SAVAGE’s early history and legacy.

“Universal want to put out all the old stuff, so we’re going to,” Haller told Eonmusic. “We’ve gone through all these tapes and all these recordings from the ’80s. Then Viv and I came up with the idea, ‘Why don’t we do two new ones?’ So we recorded two new songs, and they’re ready to rock and roll.”

The new recordings will be included alongside a collection of previously unreleased and rare SWEET SAVAGE material from the band’s classic era. According to Haller, the release will highlight the strength of the band’s early songwriting and recordings, underscoring why they became one of the most highly regarded acts of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal and earned lasting respect within the heavy metal community.

Although the new tracks were originally planned for release this year, the project has been delayed due to scheduling conflicts. Campbell’s extensive touring commitments with Def Leppard have limited the time available for promotion, leading SWEET SAVAGE to postpone the release and set their sights on an early 2027 launch instead.

“We think it would be more advantageous to hold it until the start of next year,” Haller explained. “The two new songs are absolutely amazing. It’s Viv, and it’s the Viv that we know.”

The announcement marks a remarkable full-circle moment for SWEET SAVAGE. Campbell co-founded the Belfast band alongside Haller during their teenage years, helping to shape a sound that would go on to influence generations of metal musicians. Although his time with the group was relatively short, his distinctive guitar work on the band’s early recordings became a cornerstone of SWEET SAVAGE’s legacy and an enduring part of its appeal.

SWEET SAVAGE’s status as an influential force in heavy metal was further reinforced when Metallica recorded a cover of “Killing Time” as the B-side to 1991’s “The Unforgiven” single. Haller has often acknowledged that endorsement as a pivotal moment for the band, helping introduce SWEET SAVAGE to a worldwide audience and reigniting interest in the group years after its original breakup.

Campbell’s return comes at a time when SWEET SAVAGE is experiencing renewed momentum, following the successful release of its critically acclaimed 2025 album, Bang. Def Leppard has released professionally filmed footage of the band performing its cover of Depeche Mode’s classic “Personal Jesus”, captured during the group’s third Las Vegas residency, Def Leppard Live At Caesars Palace: The Las Vegas Residency, which took place this past February.

The 12-show engagement followed the band’s previously sold-out Las Vegas residencies in 2013 and 2019, and marked the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame inductees’ first appearance at the 4,300-capacity The Colosseum at Caesars Palace.

On the creation of the song, DEF LEPPARD lead singer Joe Elliott shares: “This song’s been an amazing journey from concept to conclusion. I said to Phil [Collen, DEF LEPPARD guitarist] one day, ‘I’ve got this idea for a lyric where the narrator is at absolute rock bottom and wants to rise up to a higher level. Do you have a musical piece that might match with that?’ And he said, ‘As it happens, yes I do.”.

Collen adds: “I had this riff, this idea for a song a while ago actually, so when Joe came to me I created this drum loop based with a tribal sound and it fit perfectly with this other arrangement I had. I sent it to Joe and it was like magic — he sang straight over the top of it. And that’s how the song was formed. Then we gave it to Ronan [McHugh] who’d done a proper drum loop with different sounds. It all started gelling and just sounded like a powerful chant. We love it. It’s hard rock for us. It’s got a bit more of an ‘oomph’ than stuff we’ve been doing for a while. It’s kind of magical”.

Fans can look forward to an all-new, electrifying show, featuring “Rejoice” performed live alongside classic hits from DEF LEPPARD’s legendary catalog at their Las Vegas residency. “Def Leppard: Live at Caesars Palace — The Las Vegas Residency” runs through February 28, 2026, at The Colosseum at Caesars Palace. These upcoming shows follow the band’s sold-out residency runs in 2019 and 2013.

DEF LEPPARD has released the official music video for its cover of Ben E. King’s 1961 classic “Stand By Me”. All proceeds from the song will go to FireAid, which raises money for those impacted by the fires that swept through Los Angeles throughout January.

DEF LEPPARD’s version of the song is featured in the Netflix film “Bank Of Dave 2: The Loan Ranger”, which was released on January 10. The band can be seen performing the track before the credits.

DEF LEPPARD says: “We are very excited to share our take on ‘Stand By Me’ from ‘Bank Of Dave 2’, which you can stream.

“All proceeds from the track will be donated to FireAid to assist in both short-term relief efforts and long-term initiatives to prevent future fire disasters throughout Southern California.
